New Delhi (ISJ): India?s state-run National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) and India Meteorological Department (IMD) have signed a partnership for indigenous production of Drishti system ? a sophisticated instrument for assessment of runway visual range. The system helps safe landing and take-off of aircraft in poor visibility. With this India will be self-reliant in the field of front-end technology, which was the exclusive domain of a few developed countries.
The agreement was signed by Dr. Shyam Chetty, Director of NAL and Dr. L.S. Rathore, Director General of Meteorology, IMD. It encompasses a wide range of research and development of various meteorological sensors. With this, Drishti system will be deployed at all airports in the country, where IMD provides aeronautical meteorological services.
Drishti Transmissometer ? a visibility measuring system is an innovative, indigenous product, first of its kind, designed and developed by NAL to aid pilots for safe landing and take-off with visibility of less than 25 meters to more than 2000 meters. It is a mandatory system requirement at all airports as per International Civil Aviation and World Meteorological Organisations. The system is currently working in three international airports ? New Delhi, Lucknow and Kolkata. Its key features include web-enabled health monitoring, remote control of the system from any location in the country for accessing the data for maintenance.
