New Delhi (ISJ) The 105th edition of Indian Science Congress will be held at Manipur University, Imphal in March, 2018. The Session earlier scheduled to be held at Osmania University in Hyderabad was cancelled, in an unprecedented move, after the University authorities had informed the organisers that “they are not in a position to host 105th Indian Science Congress… due to certain issues in the campus.”
“We have now decided to hold the 105th Session of Indian Science Congress in Manipur University, Imphal,” Prof.Gangadhar, General Secretary (Membership Affairs) told Indian Science Journal.
It was the first time in the history of Indian Science Congress, the annual session was postponed or cancelled. The annual session, considered to be the biggest congregation of scientists in India and abroad is customarily opened by the Prime Minister.
“The process for the next session will have to start afresh,” said Prof. Gangadhar. He said, the conference will be held in the second half of March, 2018. “Members may have to do fresh registration and the Osmania University has been asked to refund the registration and accommodation fees paid by participants directly to them,” said Prof. Gangadhar.
More than 20 Nobel Laureates and a large number of scientists for all institutions in India and science administrators were expected to attend the event in Hyderabad. The participation at the Imphal session will now be re-confirmed, according to Prof. Gangadhar.
Indian Science Congress has come under criticism in the recent past, with scientists aligned to right-wing organisations hijacking its events forcing Indian-origin Nobel Laureate Venkataraman Ramakrishnan terming it a “circus”.
