New Delhi (ISJ): With fuel price remaining volatile, Indian Railways embark on a project to develop Common Rail Electronic Direct Fuel Injection system for its fleet of diesel locomotives. The fuel efficient device is being developed at the Research and Development Standard Organisation, RDSO of the Indian Railways.
Indian Railways, which maintains about 4,800 diesel locomotives, consume approximately 21 lakh kilolitres of diesel every year. It expects fuel savings to the tune of 3-4 per cent and emission reduction by 20-30%, which would result in a saving of about Rs. 500-600 crore annually.
Similar fuel injection systems are being used on all road diesel vehicles including passenger cars, which help reduce fuel consumption and emissions of harmful pollutants from these vehicles.
In the common rail systems, fuel at a high pressure (1600 bars) is injected into the cylinder by using a magnetic valve. It is possible to have multiple injections in the cylinder, thus reducing stress on the cylinder parts and reduce fuel consumption and emissions at the same time.
Railways plan to manufacture CReDI system, placing India among the few nations possessing design and manufacturing capabilities for such sophisticated system for large bore engines like locomotives, marine, trucks and battle tanks.
